Liz says: I read an article this week discussing the modern-day phenomenon of forming an emotional, friendship-like attachment to the fictional characters in our lives. I’m sure the article was referring to sophisticated television shows like Breaking Bad or The Sopranos, but the trend applies to any ongoing series that unfolds over a long period of time. We become involved with our characters; we become annoyed and exasperated when they make bad decisions and then worry for them. We become so attached that we actually grieve, much in the same way as we would at the death of an actual friend, when their stories come to an end.
This week I say goodbye to one of my favourite ongoing series, and it’s all rather bittersweet. Locke & Key is one of the finest stories I’ve ever enjoyed in any form of media, and I will genuinely miss having it in my life. I care about it. And I couldn’t have hoped for a better ending.
Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez have pulled off something really special with this series. I hope they’ll work together again and create something with the kind of magic that Locke & Key brought with it each month. Together or separately, I have every faith that they will. Until then, I’ll be weeping into the pages of Alpha #2, wishing my characters the best of luck, wherever they may be.
Goodbye, Locke & Key – it was an unforgettable ride.
