Loki: Agent of Asgard #1
By Al Ewing (w), Lee Garbett (a)
Marvel Comics

Liz says: Before I start, full disclosure: I am a massive Loki fangirl. I have a Tumblr, I think Tom Hiddleston is dreamy and I have donned Lady Loki cosplay; I am the full-on fangirl package. I mention this only to emphasize my vested, biased interest here. And after several years of delighting in Kieron Gillen’s wonderful, astute treatment of the character, I had my misgivings about the creative reigns being passed to another writer with whom I was unfamiliar.

Need I have worried? Not one bit. This first issue of Loki: Agent of Asgard was way more fun, funny, and exciting than whatever I’d vaguely expected, even with my hopes as high as they’d been. Al Ewing is now on my radar as a writer to watch out for; he managed to keep me laughing while simultaneously keeping me guessing, and that is exactly what I look for in a Loki book. Loki is the original trickster; what makes a trickster character so compelling is the fact that his audience can like him and root for him, but cannot trust him. He is a source of chaos if only for the sake of precipitating change. Ewing gets it, and he’s already making the most of it. Oh, and did I mention that the art is fantastic? It is fantastic. I couldn’t be happier with the choice of Lee Garbett as the artist on this book, and I now need to scour the Internet for more of his work.

So, my massive fangirl verdict? Five stars! Thousands of reblogs! Possible new cosplay! My full stamp of approval. Ewing and Garbett probably knew they had their work cut out for them, and they delivered one hundred percent. Can’t wait for issue #2!
