Liz says: DC’s Young Animal imprint continues to impress with the debut issue of ‘Cave Carson Has a Cybernetic Eye’, a book with a great, crazy title and a surprisingly straightforward setup.
For those not previously familiar with the character, (that would be roughly 97% of you, myself included), Cave Carson is a spelunker and adventurer who appeared in a half-dozen Silver Age issues of ‘The Brave and the Bold’ and ‘Showcase’. He was briefly resurrected for the 1980’s series ‘Forgotten Heroes’ and made cameos in a handful of other books, but for the most part, had faded to obscurity.
Way picks up Carson’s story shortly after the death of his wife, a fellow adventurer. He is middle-aged, unsure of what to do with himself as a widower, facing his return to work and trying to connect with his grown-up daughter Chloe.
In the meantime, there are other forces at work, and a big last-page reveal that will leave some readers fist-pumping and some just scratching their heads. Either way, another solid start to the latest Young Animal book!
P.S.- The Tom Scioli backup strips are worth the price of admission all by themselves.
