Spider-Man/ Deadpool #1
Joe Kelly (w), Ed McGuinness (a)
Marvel Comics
Liz says: Long ago (back in the nineties), Deadpool was simply a B-list character with a deeply weird ongoing series wherein he crushed on Bea Arthur, pestered the X-Force and his supporting cast included a blind old lady he kept trapped in his attic and a long-suffering straight-man called Weasel. It was great. In possibly my favourite issue of anything ever (Deadpool vol. 1, #11) Deadpool travels through time into a 1960’s issue of Amazing Spider-man, resulting in sixty-four pages of insane hilarity that had me laughing so hard I nearly did myself an injury. The creators responsible for this bonkers book are Joe Kelly and Ed McGuinness, and after a hiatus of almost twenty years, they’re back on the Merc with a Mouth in a team-up book with none other than the Amazing Spidey himself.
Kelly is no stranger to writing Spider-man, either; around the end of the Brand New Day era, Kelly was part of a revolving team of writers on the series and proffered some of the most wonderful and underrated Spider-man issues I’ve read. So it comes as no surprise that the first issue of
Spider-man/Deadpool is hilarious, perfectly characterized and wacky enough to get away with some truly off-colour jokes while forging a relationship between the two characters. This book has been announced as an ongoing series, so who knows whether or not Kelly and McGuinness will stay on it long-term, but for as long as they are, I plan to relish every issue.
P.S.- Spider-man/Deadpool issue #1 contains a bonus issue of one of the most buzzed-about books of the All-New Marvel Now titles, The Vision #1! Worth the price of admission all on its own.
