Liz says: With so many great books out this week, it’s tough to narrow down a standout. When pressed to choose though, this week’s Detective takes the cake. Following up on the back-up strip of previous issues, the focus here is on the strained dynamic between Commissioner Gordon and his son James. What’s interesting is that James Jr. has been a peripheral character over decades of Batman mythology and has never really been fleshed out. His appearance now as an adult with a past is surprising and thrillingly scary. The diner scene at the beginning of the issue is one of the most unsettling encounters I’ve read in a long time. I can’t wait to see what comes next.
