Liz says: I think what I enjoyed most about the first issue of the new Avengers series is that a few pages into it, I forgot I was reading the first issue. No clunky character introductions, no wedging-in of every single member of the team, no masses of exposition to wade through; just straight into the action, and off we go. Mark Waid reminds us what a pro he is by introducing us to (most of) the team over the course of two separate stories, both simple and evenly paced. This is an interesting and diverse team, varying in age, gender, race, and culture; Waid promptly acknowledges that these dynamics will play a part in the story without overdoing it and making it feel forced. What stood out most is how effortless it all felt and how easy it was to become involved with the characters, and that, to me, is what a great first issue should be.
