Liz says: This week’s comics, you say? Nope, sorry – my ability to talk about comics (or anything else, for that matter) has been bulldozed by the cinematic release of ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’, so I’m just going to have to talk about that.
After a long and wistful three-year wait, Earth’s Mightiest Heroes are back on-screen together, tripping on chaos magic and bashing up robots. This time, they’re uniting to thwart Ultron, a villain as worthy as one could hope for, played to smarmy perfection by James Spader.
A whole slew of new faces are introduced and a lot of world-building is done to further the overall franchise. What really shines though are the characters we know and love, interacting together. Whether they’re charging fearlessly into glorious battle or sharing some jokey downtime, the film showcases the camaraderie and confidence that has developed between them, which is gratifying for any long-time fan to see. The epiphany I had about three-quarters of the way through watching ‘Age of Ultron’ is that this film, more than any other, truly feels like watching a comic book come to life.
