Thors #1
Jason Aaron (w), Chris Sprouse (a)
Marvel Comics

Liz says: I wasn’t going to write about Thors this week because – truth be told – I’ve chosen to write about Jason Aaron’s Thor run a number of times and for the sake of variety I’m actively trying not to. So while it may not be surprising that I’m picking a Thor book, what is surprising is absolutely everything about this Thor book.

Because Thors, my friends, is a crime procedural. Yes, you read that right – a crime procedural, with a hard-boiled detective (Ultimate Thor), his loyal partner (Beta Ray Bill), an oddball forensics scientist (Throg), a grizzled old police chief (King Thor), and a few more tropes to boot. And of course, there’s a cracking murder mystery that they’re all mixed up in. Think Gotham Central meets Original Sin meets… well, Thor.

So… CSI: Asgard? Deicide: Life on the Streets? This should and would be awful under just about anyone else’s pen, but Jason Aaron makes it work and then some. Unbelievably different to any Thor book I’ve read, or ever expected to read, and I just can’t help but want to share it.
